General information
Organisation
The French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) is a key player in research, development and innovation in four main areas :
• defence and security,
• nuclear energy (fission and fusion),
• technological research for industry,
• fundamental research in the physical sciences and life sciences.
Drawing on its widely acknowledged expertise, and thanks to its 16000 technicians, engineers, researchers and staff, the CEA actively participates in collaborative projects with a large number of academic and industrial partners.
The CEA is established in ten centers spread throughout France

Job description
The recycling team (about 20 people, researchers, technicians, Phd and post doctoral fellow) is engaged for more than 10 years on development and understanding of hydrometallurgical and electrochemical recycling process in order to address New technologies for Energy end of life: mainly on lithium ion batteries but also on PEMFC, PV, permanent magnets, WEEE. Environmental impacts of the developed process are take into account as driver of our strategy.
Our main objective is to make the link between academic /fundamental work and industrial recycling needs and support industrial partners to fulfill legal requirements in this area.
Our main skills are electrochemistry and hydrometallurgy. We also benefit from the CEA ecosystem and nano-characterization tools and expertise. Mechanisms understanding is key to develop disruptive process.
-> We need your scientific and human competencies to support our research activity increase in lithium ion batteries recycling field
Faced to the climate challenges, demand for lithium-ion batteries is staggering, and this in turn is driving historical demand for a number of materials (cobalt, lithium, graphite, etc.). Against a backdrop of geopolitical constraints, tougher European legislation and growing economic, social and environmental challenges, the recycling of batteries both for EV but also for domestic application is becoming essential.
Recycling processes have to be flexible low cost and high throughput processes that can be tailored to both the waste input and the best valorization way of treatment, integrating cathode chemistry evolutions.
As batteries recycling researcher, you will work on several scientific challenges, especially
- on the development of new deactivation processes concerning domestic lithium ion batteries
- on the reduction of hydrometallurgical step cost.
You will have the opportunity to suggest and develop your ideas and you skills, in a multidisciplinary environment, with universities partnerships, industrial collaborations and major research infrastructures (ILL, ESRF).
More precisely, you will
- Lead industrial and academic projects
- Develop innovative process (electrochemical and/or hydrometallurgical process) with high focus on the understanding /characterization of physico chemical mechanisms
- Participate to experiments implementation, realization and follow up, with deliverables redaction
- Valorize your research work with patents application, publications and conferences
- Build your expertise field thanks to projects set up (ANR, Europe, JCJC, ERC)
- Participate to the recycling team scientific and strategic roadmaps update , and suggest scientific resourcing actions
- Manage/supervise thesis students
Applicant Profile
With an engineering degree/university diploma and a doctorate in electrochemistry / chemistry, already author of significant scientific articles, you have developed academic knowledge and expertise in the research and development field of electrochemistry or/and chemical separation, for more than 5 years.
You have affinity for experimental set up building, and mechanisms understanding.
Your ability to work as part of a team and to communicate, as well as your adaptability, will enable you to integrate quickly and conclude your project. Scientific valorization of the results will take form of publications in journals with international reading committee and participation to scientific conferences.
