General information
Organisation
The French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) is a key player in research, development and innovation in four main areas :
• defence and security,
• nuclear energy (fission and fusion),
• technological research for industry,
• fundamental research in the physical sciences and life sciences.
Drawing on its widely acknowledged expertise, and thanks to its 16000 technicians, engineers, researchers and staff, the CEA actively participates in collaborative projects with a large number of academic and industrial partners.
The CEA is established in ten centers spread throughout France

Subject
Exploring the Mechanisms of Photobiomodulation in a Biomimetic Neuronal Microenvironment
Contract duration (months)
6 months
Job description
Can the mechanical environment of neurons influence their response to light?
Photobiomodulation (PBM) is an emerging non pharmacological therapeutic approach using light to modulate cellular functions, with promising applications in neuroscience. However, its mechanisms of action remain incompletely understood.
Neuronal behaviour is strongly influenced by the mechanical properties of the surrounding microenvironment, a factor often overlooked in conventional in vitro models. Could substrate stiffness influence neuronal responses to PBM and reveal new insights into its cellular mechanisms?
This internship aims to develop and characterise a biomimetic neuronal culture system using soft substrates with controlled mechanical properties to investigate how the mechanical microenvironment modulates PBM effects. You will contribute to:
- Developing and characterising biomimetic soft substrates and establishing neuronal cultures.
- Investigating the influence of substrate stiffness on neuronal behaviour and responses to PBM.
- Exploring the underlying cellular mechanisms using a dedicated PBM illumination setup integrated into a cell culture incubator.
Applicant Profile
Why join us?
Join a multidisciplinary research team at CEA-Leti, in collaboration with CNRS LTM, and explore an original scientific question at the crossroads of neuroscience, cellular biomechanics and light based therapies.
This internship offers hands-on experience in an innovative research field, with potential implications for future neuroprotective strategies and the possibility of continuing towards a PhD, subject to project development and funding.
Who are we looking for?
A curious and motivated Master 2 student with a background in cell biology, molecular biology, cellular physiology, biophysics or a related discipline.
An interest in neuroscience and interdisciplinary experimental research will be particularly appreciated.
