Job description
CEA LETI, a leader in the development and manufacturing of integrated solid-state batteries, is ready for the next step towards innovation in energy storage integration for implantable medical devices. Dive with us into the exciting world of microbatteries! This internship, which could lead to a PhD, offers you the opportunity to participate in the development of a new technological building block: electrodeposition of cathode materials and their integration into micro-devices.
Monitoring certain pathologies remains a challenge due to the power supply requirements of implanted medical devices. A potential solution lies in the development of energy-autonomous sensors through integration of tiny microbatteries. The demand for more efficient and durable battery materials is pivotal for such devices. Conventional electrode materials are typically synthesized via physical vapor deposition (PVD), a process that is both energy-intensive and time-consuming, and that limits the thickness of deposited layers—essential for increasing microbattery capacity. Electrodeposition, on the other hand, offers a novel approach, allowing a wide range of material synthesis and selective deposition on microelectronic substrates under milder conditions. Electrochemical deposition is expected to have a strong leverage effect by increasing the device architecture options and applications fields..
Throughout this internship, you will explore cathode materials for solid-state microbatteries. You will work on the implementation and optimization of oxide (MnO2, FeO2, NiO2) electrodeposition in aqueous solutions at room temperature, using a classic electrochemical experimental setup on samples without patterns and then on micron-sized patterned samples. Your work will involve morphological and structural characterization of the materials (X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, SEM) as well as electrochemical characterizations (cyclic voltammetry, impedance spectroscopy). By joining our lab, you will benefit from a comprehensive experience, a 360-degree immersion in materials development and integration into devices.
