Experimental Study and Optimization of Core-Shell Microcapsules Formation in a Centrifugal Microfluidic Device for the Standardized Production of Organoids
Contract duration (months)
6 months
Job description
As part of an innovative research project, you will study a new process for the formation of monodisperse spherical core-shell microcapsules using centrifugal force. The core, made of a biomaterial promoting cell growth and organoid formation, will be surrounded by a shell providing mechanical protection.
The two biopolymers are simultaneously injected through a specially designed ejection nozzle to form the microcapsules, which are then collected in a gelling bath. Your work will focus on optimizing the geometry of the ejection nozzle and experimentally investigating the influence of its different parameters on microcapsule formation, size, and quality.
The optimized design will then be validated through cell encapsulation and organoid production in order to assess the biological performance of the process.
You will work with an existing experimental setup, within a multidisciplinary team and in close collaboration with a PhD student working on the development of this technology.
Main Tasks
- Optimize the design of the production nozzle to generate spherical and monodisperse core-shell microcapsules using our centrifugal system.
- Characterize and analyze the produced microcapsules using conventional imaging techniques, with a focus on their morphology.
- Establish a phase diagram as a function of the relevant process parameters.
- Propose new approaches and contribute to the optimization of the microcapsule production process.
- Work in a multidisciplinary environment combining biotechnology, microfluidics, and bioengineering.
Applicant Profile
Master’s 2 student (M2) with a background in biotechnology, physics, bioengineering, or a related field.
Experience in microfluidics and basic knowledge of cell biology would be an advantage.
Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team are expected.
